Essendon has retained Will Setterfield for the 2026 season, officially re-listing the on-baller as an SSP signing this week.

The 27-year-old was initially released from the list ahead of the Telstra AFL Draft due to the squeeze for spots in a busy acquisition period for the Club, but with Nic Martin placed on the inactive list for his reinjured knee, a position opened up.

Setterfield has suited up 27 times for the Bombers in his three seasons with the Club to date, producing career-best form on the park this year despite his injury setbacks.

In 13 games throughout 2025, the 192cm midfielder’s repeat efforts and inside grunt came to the fore – an average of 7.4 tackles per game was considered elite by competition standards – he also went at a PB of nearly 22 touches per game.

Often taking on shutdown roles against the league’s best such as Isaac Heeney and Patrick Cripps throughout the season, Setterfield was lauded by the Bombers faithful for his tough, no-nonsense approach.

Setterfield is grateful for another season in the sash coming his way.

“Every year you get to wear the Club colours is a privilege, so I’m really grateful for another season in the sash,” Setterfield said.

“I look forward to working closely with our High-Performance team on getting my body right. The club's support has been amazing, and we are in a really good spot.

“I want to be ready to give everything for the team in 2026. I can’t wait to get back out there with the boys and in front of the Bomber faithful."

A much-loved member of the playing group, the Dons are happy to be keeping Setterfield on next season.

“We’re thrilled for Will. He’s had a tough waiting game over the last few months, so it’s great to see a well-deserved opportunity open up for him,” General Manager – List & Recruiting Matt Rosa said.

“He’s been terrific for us in a bunch of different midfield roles over the past few seasons and you just know the level of commitment and effort you’re going to get when he’s out there.

"Will’s a popular member of our squad and the boys are rapt he’s got another crack at it this season."

Recovering from a foot injury sustained near the end of last season, Setterfield is aiming for a return to action early in the 2026 season.
