Essendon’s Zach Merrett has been named in Victorias squad for the 2026 State of Origin clash, earning the honour of pulling on the iconic Big V jumper.

The 29-year-old arrives at State of Origin selection in outstanding 2025 form. Merrett averaged nearly 28 disposals per game across 22 matches this season and took out the Club’s Crichton Medal for the third time in a row.

One of the AFL’s most consistent midfielders, Merrett said the selection held deep personal significance, acknowledging the history and legacy attached to representing Victoria.

The Dons star will line up alongside some of the game’s biggest names, including Nick Daicos, Sam Darcy, Jeremy Cameron and Max Gawn.

Merrett is honoured and excited to take on the opportunity to represent Victoria.

“It’s genuinely humbling to get the call-up to represent Victoria. You grow up watching highlights of the great Big V sides - Lockett, Ablett, Harvey - and you realise that jumper carries a lot of weight,” Merrett said.

"To be able to represent my family, my junior Club at the Cobden Bombers, and the state alongside this group of players is something I won’t take for granted.

“We know WA will be passionate on their home deck, but we’re going over there to do the jumper proud.”

The match will be played at Optus Stadium in Perth on Saturday, February 14, with Victoria set to face a passionate Western Australian outfit on their home deck.

More details on ticketing and game access will be provided in the new year.
