Essendon officially hosted its 2026 Season Launch in front of a strong crowd at Crown Palladium on Monday night, coinciding with the induction of three champions into the Club’s Hall of Fame.
On a night largely looking to a bright future for the Bombers - every member of the current playing list being presented their guernseys – it was also a night to commemorate the past.
Premiership Captain Mark ‘Bomber’ Thompson, dual Crichton Medallist Jason Johnson and ‘Mosquito Fleet’ Premiership rover Frank Maher were unveiled as the three newest members of the Club’s decorated Hall of Fame, while a slew of former legends presented kits to the newest members of the 2026 list.
Thompson and Johnson were on hand to address the crowd following their inductions, with Maher’s family accepting his posthumous recognition for a career which held two Premierships (1923-’24) and four seasons as skipper.
The past legends spoke to their pride in being recognised as Essendon people.
“Playing for this Club has been the most fulfilling experience of my life,” Johnson said.
“What’s incredible is that it continues to give me so much beyond my playing days. Essendon gave me a career, it gave me lifelong mates with cherished memories, and it gave me standards I carry with me every single day.
“Running out in front of you on a big night at the MCG was a privilege every single time. I’m forever grateful, thank you for this incredible honour.”
The Dons also celebrated the efforts of a group of volunteers for their long and devoted service to the Club.
55-year stalwart Colin Hooper was acknowledged as a winner of this year’s prestigious Jack Titus Award, while the efforts of Charlie Italia, Murray Spargo and Robert Destradi were also acknowledged in a special presentation.
President Andrew Welsh gave a spirited address to the members and fans in attendance, emphasising the growing connection and palpable unity felt within the four walls on the verge of the campaign.
Stepping into the Presidency last September and resoundingly re-elected to the Board in December, Welsh is excited for Bomber fans to embark on a new era for the Club.
New skipper Andrew McGrath received a hearty ovation from the faithful when presented to the stage alongside Senior Coach Brad Scott.
The Club’s 42nd Captain in its history, McGrath is counting down the days to officially own the role on matchday for the first time in a mammoth clash against Hawthorn on Friday week.
