ESSENDON coach Matthew Knights does not believe Barry Hall will get any preferential treatment from umpires when his team meets the Western Bulldogs on Friday night.

The fallout from Hall's fiery clash with North Melbourne's Scott Thompson saw Bulldogs coach Rodney Eade highlighting what he believes to be his man's raw deal from the men in white.

Umpires boss Jeff Gieschen admitted the incident should have resulted in a free kick to Hall, who was reported for rough conduct.

The charge was later thrown out, meaning the Bombers now have the task of curbing Hall's influence when the two teams meet at Etihad Stadium.

Knights said his players will keep within in the rules when combating Hall, but also indicated they would not back down.

“I don't think the umpires are going to go out and start paying Barry free after free for any incidental contact,” he said from Windy Hill on Tuesday.

“I think they'll call it as they see it.

“Dustin [Fletcher] and Tayte [Pears], and our defenders, will play Barry Hall ... and will do their very best to play aggressive football, but legal - that's all you ask of your players.”

Friday night’s clash with the Bulldogs kicks off a month that may well determine whether the Bombers will again see September action.

Matches against the Sydney Swans (SCG), Geelong (Etihad) and Hawthorn (MCG) will follow for Knights, who admits his team has built “a touch of momentum” to sit just a game outside the top eight.

“It’s a really important month ahead,” he said.

“It’s vital … Friday night footy on a big stage and it should be a big crowd.”

Knights watched the first half of the Bulldogs’ crushing win over North Melbourne before leaving to coach his own side later that night.

He said the Dogs looked in “red-hot” touch and would be tough to counter this week.

“They [looked] in purple form to me,” he said.

“They were efficient with the ball, their skill level was back to where it was at the end of last year.

“Their last two weeks [against] Sydney and the Kangaroos, they’ve demonstrated that they’re back in a big way.”

Knights hopes rebounding defender Nathan Lovett-Murray can prove his fitness this week as he battles a foot injury, but youngster Jake Melksham is only a 50-50 chance to play as he tries to overcome an ankle.

Runner Ricky Dyson (knee) is only rated an outside chance to return while Kyle Reimers (thumb), having missed a month, may resume through the VFL.
