Zak Johnson will miss a large portion of the 2026 season after suffering a broken foot in the round nine clash against GWS.

Johnson reported soreness in his left foot following the game, with scans on Monday morning confirming the injury. Johnson will not undergo surgery, with the Club to provide further updates on his progress in the coming weeks.

Essendon’s GM - AFL Daniel McPherson said the Club is disappointed for the emerging Don but look forward to seeing him back out on the field later this year.

“It’s a disappointing setback for 'Johnno', as he's worked incredibly hard to earn his opportunities at AFL level this season and continues to show strong growth on and off the field,” McPherson said.

“His recent contract extension reflects both the calibre of player, as well as the person he is around the Club.

“He’ll use this next period of time to put himself in a strong position to return in great shape later in the season."

The Club will provide a further update on Johnson’s recovery timeline in the coming weeks.
