Mason Redman will lead the Bombers out as skipper on the MCG for his 150th game this weekend.
The 28-year-old assumes the reins for his milestone day after forward-turned-defender Kyle Langford led the side manfully in Andy McGrath’s absence over the past fortnight.
A member of the leadership group over the last two seasons, the South Australian has been a staple for the Bombers and an experienced head in a young side – from the current squad, only two players have been on the list longer.
The ‘Red Dog’ has been restricted by injury this year but remains instrumental in the back half, his 30-disposal effort in Dreamtime at the ‘G proof of that.
Originally flagged as a winger/half forward option when joining the Club via the 2015 draft, it was in his exposure off half back that Redman really flourished through the latter part of that decade.
A breakout on the road against a building Lions side in 2018 set him on a trajectory to Most Improved Player honours the following season, becoming a rock-solid component of the back six into the 2020s.
His desire to impact forward of centre began to translate into his forays up the ground, with teammates frequently identifying his massive kicking threat from a sneaky handball receive around the arc – there’s a reason opposition sides still get nervous of his presence within 70 metres of goal.
2023 still stands as a starring year for the defender, who claimed a maiden top three finish in the Crichton Medal and earned himself a deal through to the end of the 2028 season.
Respected around the NEC Hangar as one of its finest team men, Redman has earned both Bruce Heymanson Best Clubman and John Kilby Trainers and Staff Awards throughout his 11 years at the Bombers.
Redman’s moment in the spotlight as Captain comes with the Dons and Demons standing together in honour of Neale Daniher’s legacy, respecting his impact for each Club and also the wider community through his brave fight against motor neurone disease.
