This week he brings you his final column and takes a look at the season that was 2003. “In 2002 Essendon finished the home and away season in fifth place andlost in the second week of the finals against Port Adelaide. Twelvemonths later, an eighth place finish and another finals exit courtesy ofthe Power seems to indicate a side treading water at best or taking astep backwards at worst, right? Injury has almost certainly robbed Essendon captain James Hird of a second Brownlow Medal. Hird finished with 19 votes – just three votes behind joint winners Adam Goodes (Sydney), Nathan Buckley (Collingwood) and Mark Ricciuto (Adelaide). It was a remarkable effort considering he missed six games with injury and went off in the early minutes of two others. Round by round voting is attached.
