It would be preferable for the 2006 Anzac Day fixture to be played in Melbourne rather than switched to Sydney, Essendon chief executive Peter Jackson said today. He was responding to speculation that the game could head north in 2006 because the Commonwealth Games will rule out the MCG as a venue for the first six weeks of that season.

""There is a lot to consider but there would want to be a number of very good reasons to take the game away from Melbourne,"" Jackson said. ""This is where it has built its tradition and I’m not convinced the match would attract a sell out crowd in Sydney as has been suggested in some circles.""

""There have been some very big games played in Sydney recently against the biggest clubs in the competition and they have struggled to break 50,000. If you take Sydney out of the equation then you run a real risk of having one of the showcase games of the year played in front of a crowd that won’t do it justice.

""Anzac Day 2006 is also on a Tuesday so I also don’t think you would necessarily get that many people travelling up from Victoria to watch the game live. It is not just a matter of taking a long weekend.""

""There is only one venue that the game could be played at in Victoria and that is at The Dome. This is not a game The Dome would normally be entitled to so they would need to make some changes to access so getting to the game is fair and equitable for supporters of both clubs,"" he said.

""There are certainly some issues that have to be considered given the unavailability of the MCG and ultimately this decision rests with the AFL, however I don’t think at this stage there is a compelling reason to have it shifted. It is also a Collingwood home game so they will be in discussions with the AFL.""
