RAMPANT ALVEY LEADS YOUNG BOMBERS TO WIN
The Bendigo Bombers – minus star recruits Gary Moorcroft and Jordan Doering along with captain Nick Carter – have kicked off their pre-season in fine style, recording a 20-point win over Coburg at Moorabbin yesterday. And the star of the show was new Bomber recruit Mark Alvey who showed he has completely recovered from a knee reconstruction. The former Bulldog ran riot and looks set to play a significant role for the senior side in 2004.

""Alvey was outstanding,’ said VFL team manager Blair Hartley. ""He moved extremely well, kicked with both feet and continually hit targets up forward. It was a very encouraging start."" The Bombers’ win was more meritorious given Coburg had Ben Marsh and Joel Bowden playing for them.
Other good players for Essendon were Jobe Watson who did well in the midfield. He left the match early after rolling his ankle but the injury is not serious. James Davies did well, kicking two goals while Luke Hawkins (three goals) and Andrew Lovett were also useful. Draftees Ricky Dyson and Jay Nash did well on wings.
The downside for the Bombers was an injury to Aaron Henneman. Henneman re-injured his hamstring and now faces an uphill battle to be ready for the start of the season.
Bomber supporters, football fans in general, the Essendon playing group and coaches are eagerly awaiting Adam Ramanauskas’ return to senior football tomorrow night. 2004 joint best and fairest winner Scott Lucas said when Ramanauskas’ name was read out by Kevin Sheedy at yesterday’s meeting the entire team was pretty excited for him. ""It is an important step for him to come back and to be able to do it so early in the year has been good for him. It certainly adds a bit to the game for us because he is such an important member of our team and such an important member of the club, that we are all looking forward to it,"" Lucas said.
