The AFL launched Heritage Round earlier today at Yarra Park, adjoining the Melbourne Cricket Ground, where Scotch College and Melbourne Grammar played the first football match in 1858.As part of the themed round, all clubs will wear heritage guernseys for their matches, recognising key chapters in parts of their respective histories.

The basic Essendon guernsey design has been unchanged since the then-VFL began in 1897, and the club's jumper in fact pre-dates the VFL competition by some 25 years. The guernsey to be worn this weekend features a slightly narrower sash than normal, harking back to the first days of football when players wore an actual sash draped over one shoulder.

Other clubs:
Adelaide -- The Crows will wear their original 1991 design differentiated to include their old style heritage logo on the front, and will recognise their SANFL heritage by displaying the SANFL logo on the rear of the guernsey.

Brisbane Lions – The Brisbane Lions will wear a replica of the strip the club wore to signify the beginning of a new era at the start of 1992, pledging to develop young players and move to the Gabba from Carrara the following year.

Carlton -- The Carlton guernsey is a replica of the original Carlton Guernsey worn between 1871 and 1909 with the addition of the CFC monogram in old English lettering as worn between 1909 and 1919.

Collingwood – Collingwood has chosen the 1953 Premiership guernsey design. Lou Richards was captain & this was the year Bob Rose played in a Collingwood Premiership.

Fremantle -- The wearing of the red and white jumper of the original Fremantle Football Club in the Heritage Round against Carlton recognises the rich football heritage of Fremantle.

Geelong -- The guernsey is a replica of the club's playing strip from its origin in the 1850s.

Hawthorn -- The guernsey is a replica of the 1925 jumper, the year Hawthorn entered the VFL competition. Known as the Mayblooms, the Hawthorn jumper was an adaption of its former VFA guernsey that was brown with a round gold yoke.

Kangaroos – The club will wear a replica of the jumper from 1888, when the town of Hotham was proclaimed as North Melbourne, and the club of Hotham became North Melbourne.

Melbourne – Melbourne will wear a Guernsey recognising changes made after World War One, where the yoke and laceup strip widened to the red 'V' of the modern colours, and with the navy blue body, became the colours worn by the Club today.

Richmond -- Richmond has chosen to wear a replica of the guernsey it briefly wore in its VFA days, before joining the VFL. This was a traditional lace-up jumper and the central stripe down the front of the jumper is where the laces appeared.

St Kilda – St Kilda is wearing the jumper the club wore from 1932-56.

Sydney – Sydney will wear a replica of the Guernsey worn by the club when it won its last premiership in 1933.

West Coast – West Coast will wear the original Guernsey as worn in the first season the club played in 1987.

Western Bulldogs - The Western Bulldogs will take the field in the same guernsey worn by the Footscray team that defeated Melbourne in the 1954 Grand Final.
