2003
Jay Nash has represented the South Australian under 18s for the past two seasons and has also played in the Central Districts reserves for the past two seasons - they have won the premiership in both years. He played off half back most of last season but he has also played in the midfield and on a wing. Nash was drafted by Essendon with selection 28 at the 2003 National Draft.
STRENGTHS
Nash has good finishing skills and is a fast mover. He is a good reader of the play and isn’t afraid to back himself and take a few risks.
POSITION
Nash is a medium-sized defender / midfielder. He has good pace and with a few pre-seasons under his belt will be a welcome addition to the Bomber’s mid-field ranks.
2004
2004 will predominantly be a learning year for the draftee. His major aim will be to work on his physical strength and fitness. It is no secret that Bomber coach Kevin Sheedy likes to give the young players a taste of senior action early in their careers, so Essendon supporters may see Nash in the senior team this season.
WHAT SHEEDY SAYS
Jay is a young player that we have got over from Adelaide. He has worked hard over the pre-season and he needs to keep improving his speed. He is a footballer that will be a very good size – he could be another Andrew Welsh and you would be pretty happy with that. He has a good football brain and he has got the ability. We just need to make sure we get him up and training to where we think his best position is going to be. We will probably need this year to find out where that is.
