Despite sitting fourteenth on the AFL ladder, with only one win for the season, Kevin Sheedy is remaining positive and urging Essendon fans to understand the club is in a rebuilding phase. Speaking at a press conference today, Sheedy reinforced the club is the process of developing a side that can win a premiership in the next couple of years.

""My job is to keep preparing a team that will one day get us to the top four and in with a chance. If it is our turn to go down to the bottom and come back up then hopefully we wont be down there too long this year and any other year,"" Sheedy explained.

""I know footy is a week to week, must win situation. But I have seen clubs win week to week for 30 years and win no premierships.

""Well how good is that? I would rather look at trying to get players to make sure we win a premiership one day. It’s the way to go and it’s the message I would like to get to our fans.""

And while Sheedy is philosophical of where his team is at, he believes the Bombers of 2006 shouldn’t be written off just yet. While they are only two games out of the top eight, the coach believes they can turn their season around and still make the finals.

""We have been extremely competitive and its not like we have been blazed out of the water by any club this year,"" he said.

""In general, we could have won four of the six games this season and maybe five.

""We would like to have more wins on the board. It is just an annoying and frustrating time.

""There is a very good player that we lost all of a sudden in Lloyd and it’s hard to replace that four goals at the moment, but we are working at it.

""And I ask our fans to give us that opportunity to work at replacing those four goals, it’s not a very easy thing to do.""

The first step for turning the season around is when Essendon take on Carlton this Sunday with both clubs desperate for the win after copping criticism of their seasons.

""I think in general every team is going to be in the bottom four or five in the first six to eight weeks of the year and they are always going to get their fair share of publicity.

We will probably make a couple of changes this week. We just need to get back to winning footy.""

""Carlton and Essendon have always had great games. We have always competed no matter where we are on the ladder.""
