Essendon defender Mark Baguley trained strongly on Wednesday morning in the club’s main skills session ahead of Saturday night’s clash against Port Adelaide.

Baguley missed last week’s loss to Geelong after suffering back spasms during the week at training.

The 27-year-old took part in a number of different drills and looked to run freely across the ground throughout the whole session.

Baguley has been a main stay in the Bombers back line over the last two seasons holding some of the competition’s best small forward at bay.

The all important role of playing in in form small forward Chad Wingard is likely to face Baguley if he can prove his fitness to take on the Power.

On Tuesday club doctor Bruce Reid said it would be important to see how Baguley trained during the club's main session before a decision was made on whether he would be available for selection.

"Mark missed last week with a back spasm late in the week so we will see how he is out on the track and then have a crack tomorrow,” Reid said.

“Backs can be very touchy and you will remember that we missed Hurley three or four weeks ago and it settled down quickly.”

“We would like him (Baguley) to settle down because you don’t want any chronic backs but he is looking a lot better when we looked at him today (Tuesday).”
