Essendon assistant coach Ashley Prescott says staying strong internally is the key to the team's success going foward.
Speaking on Weekend Rewind following the Bombers’ 19 point loss to Melbourne, Prescott said the coaches and players are united.
“We’re not shying away from the fact that we’ve got a lot of work to do,” Prescott said.
“But one thing we’re going to do is stick fat behind all of the coaches, and all of the players.
“We know what we’ve got to work on, we’re going to continue to go hard at what we really need to do, and we’re going to keep it really strong internally.”
Prescott said a poor first half against Melbourne meant the Bombers were always playing catch-up.
“It was a terrible, terrible first half,” he said.
“The third quarter was a little but more competitive, certainly for the first 15 minutes, but we faded again in the last quarter and probably got some soft goals in the end, and the scoreboard flattered us really.
“We allowed them to have seven or eight very easy goals through turnovers, and defensive pressure.”
Prescott said the Bombers had shown a tendancy to play well against more fancied opponents and drop off against other teams.
He singled out Jason Winderlich as one of the most valuable contributors for the Bombers, commending him for his hard running and persistence at the ball.
“I thought Jason Winderlich tried hard, he was one player you’d see breaking into space and working hard, even when he wasn’t in position to get the ball, to try and energise the side and get it going a bit.”
