One of Essendon's favourite sons - Dean Wallis - will return to the club next season as an assistant coach. After much consideration, Wallis yesterday ended his two-year stint with St Kilda and accepted a coaching offer from his beloved Bombers. ""I would walk backwards to Perth for Essendon Football Club,"" Wallis said last night. ""I played at the club for 15 years, played in two Premiership and am a life member - it was always home as far as I was concerned.""

""By the same token, I really enjoyed my two years at St Kilda. It was a really good learning experience for me. Before that I only new the one way and that was the Kevin Sheedy way so it was good to get out of Essendon for a while and see how it was done from another angle,"" Wallis said.

Wallis will come back and look after the Essendon backline on match day and have a significant input into the development of the younger players during the week. He will commence his new role with the club next week.

""An opportunity arose to come back and I certainly didn't make the decision quickly - there were a lot of things I had to weigh up,"" Wallis said. ""I am really still doing my apprenticeship - no different to a young player coming into the game and not knowing how things will turn out. All you can do is give it your best and see what happens.""

Wallis said he had kept in contact with his good friend Mark Harvey during his time at St Kilda.

""Since I have been there I have bounced a lot of things off him - we have kept in touch the whole time,"" Wallis said. ""It will be good to working with him and planning our attack. It will also be good to work with Kevin Sheedy - he is the reason I am where I am today.""

With Wallis back around Essendon there might just be a new found vigour around Essendon both on the training track and on match day.
