2002: Welsh had a dream start to his AFL career. In his first year of football he notched up 15 games and played with the self assurance of an experienced player. He slotted into the back pocket and showed playing characteristics of what Bomber coach Kevin Sheedy requires of that position – tough, rugged and not afraid to put his body on the line. His first touch in AFL football was a sign of things to come – Welsh took a courageous overhead backing into Cory McKernan.Welsh finished off the season playing in both Essendon’s final appearances, and his game against Port Adelaide was a personal highlight for the season.

Strengths: Welsh is aggressive towards the football and any opposition player that is in possession of the ball. He has a tireless work ethic and for such a young player is not afraid to throw himself into a contest. He plays with the poise of an experienced player and is extremely cool in high pressure situation. He has football smarts and rarely wastes a possession.

Position: Welsh played most of his football this season in the back pocket. In 2002 he will look to cement a spot in the Bombers backline and continue to improve on his skill level. Welsh played a mid-field role when he captained Calder Cannons in the TAC Cup competition and depending on what other players move into the centre, he may be a chance to relieve other mid-fielders and play short stints in the middle.

2003: After an impressive first season, Welsh has to ensure he doesn’t suffer the second season blues. He needs to build on the form he showed in his debut season and continue to improve his game across all areas. He has the potential to become a regular senior player in 2003 if he is determined to grab hold of the opportunity. Welsh is already highly regarded by teammates because of his professional approach to his football.

Kevin Sheedy says: Andrew has been a terrific asset to the Essendon Football Club. He is a local lad and has empathetically put his hand up for a place in this side. He is a good hard player and has the potential to replace Damien Hardwick. He needs to string a couple of good years together and help form a very good defensive unit with the others in the backline. He was a deserved recipient of the best first year player award at last year’s Crichton medal.
