Essendon has made three changes for its round two clash with Sydney, welcoming back captain Dyson Heppell and key talls Cale Hooker and Shaun McKernan.

The trio replace Orazio Fantasia (quad), Brandon Zerk-Thatcher (suspension) and Jayden Laverde (omitted) from the side that defeated Fremantle in round one.

Sunday's clash will mark Heppell's first competitive hitout since last year's elimination final, with the 28-year-old undergoing foot surgery in the off-season.

Like Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti (rolled ankle), he was listed as a test earlier in the week but got through today's main session to confirm his place in the line-up.

The Bombers and Swans will go head-to-head at the SCG from 3:35pm AEST, with the match broadcast live on Channel Seven.
