Bomber skipper James Hird and injured ruckman Paul Salmon were two notable absentees from Essendon training this afternoon. Hird missed with a virus and Salmon was swimming laps in the pool. The team had an intensive skills session at Windy Hill in preparation for Friday night's clash against the unbeaten Adelaide Crows. Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy ruled Scott Lucas out of the side and named Jordan Bannister or Ted Richards as the likely replacement for the injured Sean Wellman.

Q. In a funny sort of a way - is it nice to go into a match without a milestone?
A. It is excellent - it is tremendous from that point of view. It is just one of those situations where you move on. It happened after my 200th, 300th and 400th but the main thing is that you move on and pick the best side. You try and get out there and win the next game - Adelaide are ahead of us on the ladder.

Q. For the second week in a row you come up against an unbeaten side.
A. Well that can happen in the early part of the season. We have to make sure we look at and assess ourselves after coming back from Brisbane and working on a side that will do quite well for us this year.

Q. Adelaide are one of the higher scoring sides this season so far - are you worried how much they will stretch you in defence with Wellman out.
A. They have played very well so it is up to us to maintain our fair share of the ball and get it going our way. We have probably had the ball inside 50 more than most clubs but we don't have the score on the board at the present time that we would like to have had.

Q. Will Scott Lucas play?
A. He won't play.

Q. Who will you bring in for Wellman?
A. We will probably bring a young kid in - we are not quite sure. Maybe Ted Richards - he was a bit unlucky to be out of the side the week before. We wanted to play Joel Reynolds up in Queensland after what young Gary Ablett has been through. Reynolds has been a pretty big name around here. He played quite well for us - he is only 17. Probably one of the youngest kids to play footy this year. He will probably hold his spot - he did everything that was asked of him.

Q. Might you bring a new player in that we haven't seen this year?
A. Possibly Richards or Bannister - they have both played before. I don't think we will bring Harvey in.

Q. How is Dean Rioli travelling?
A. Pretty good - he just needs a couple of games and we are hoping to have him back in the next week or two.

Q. With Solomon and Wellman out - has that created problems for you?
A. It is a bit annoying because they are both in the same area - the backline - but Jacobs has stood up.

Q. Do think Brisbane are the team to beat this year?
A. On form they have done really, really well. You look at where Brisbane was this time last year - they were travelling mediocre and then they got their act together in the second half of the year and have been a damn good side ever since. I think sides at this stage are trying to find out what players are really going to spark up for them and from that point of view we are doing a little bit of that. There are probably five or six players that would not have played in the 2000 premiership side - so we are looking for our next best side and we will learn a lesson from last week.
