Essendon veteran Mark Mercuri will miss the next month of football after undergoing arthroscopic surgery late this afternoon. Mercuri injured his knee during the Bendigo Bombers' loss to Port Melbourne last Saturday afternoon.
""He had a lesion on the surface cartilage of his knee - basically a rough spot that needed to be smoothed out,"" Essendon doctor Bruce Reid said tonight. ""They shaved that off which took about 30 minutes. He will miss the next month.""
The injury is a bitter blow to Mercuri who had spent the past two weeks in the Bombers' VFL team. This latest injury setback will prolong Mercuri's absence from the senior team until well past the halfway mark of the season.
""The depth we have at the club at the moment is reminiscent of the 2000 and 2001 era. In Round 1 and 2 we had so many injuries that our depth was tested but we have hit back in the last few weeks. When you have only got one or two injuries, it is amazing how competitive it is to get into the side,"" reports Matthew Lloyd in his latest 'Insider' column.
