Despite Essendon’s disappointing 37-point loss to Carlton, the performance of Thomas was one of the positives to come from the match. The 22-year-old finished with 17 possessions and took the opportunity to impress while some big name players were rested.
Drafted from Central Districts in South Australia, Thomas was selected as a ready-made player who could slot straight into the senior side. He proved that last night and sent a message to the Bombers’ coaching panel, that he is here to play senior football.
The former Magarey medallist combined great poise with hardness and an aggression to be one of the Bombers best for the game. ""It was good to get out there and have a run in the black and red. I thought I went alright in patches. I found it a little faster than the SANFL footy,"" Thomas said.
""We have seven first choice players to come back, so it was good for the younger guys to get an opportunity to show what they are capable of and really put their hand up and show they might become first choice players.""
And if his form last night was an indication, Thomas could be one first year player to enjoy regular senior football in 2005.
""I thought I had missed my chance to play AFL, then in 2004 I had a consistent season, I was lucky enough to win some individual awards and play in back to back premiership side.
""When Essendon called my name out at the draft I was bewildered but happy at the same time,"" Thomas said.
Since arriving at the club, Thomas has worked hard to cement a place on the list.
""It has been an eye opening experience but I believe this has benefited me as a player.
""I’ve had a good pre-season and its been pretty different to what I have previously done, most of it had been longer, but to come here and do the short sharp power work was a lot different but suited me well,"" he said.
""At a club like Essendon you know that Kevin Sheedy and his coaches will give you an opportunity, so you know you are going to get that chance.""
