The GLoBALL program - a joint initiative run by the Essendon Football Club and Cricket Victoria - seeks to enable international students, refugees and new migrants settle into life in Australia, and aims to use sport as a vehicle to engage those new to the country into the wider Australian community.
Around 500 GLoBALL participants from 47 different countries attended the game and for many it was their first ever AFL experience. Throughout the game, ambassadors sat with groups of participants, shared their football knowledge and played their part in assisting GLoBALLers experience the Australian sporting culture.
The uniqueness of the GLoBALL program lies in the interaction between local Victorians and those who are new to the community through our Ambassador program. Ambassadors are friendly locals mostly Essendon Football Club members and supporters who volunteer to share their football knowledge and tips about life in general in Australia with those who are new to the community.
Essendon currently has more than 300 registered ambassadors and last year, GLoBALL ran an AFL Season Ambassador Training Day at Windy Hill, which saw over 50 of the 300+ ambassadors partake in specialised training session on how to share their football passion and knowledge with the GLoBALL participants.
Through the GLoBALL program, Essendon hopes to create a new generation of supporters whilst importantly, creating an environment that assists new migrants and students to feel included in the wonderful culture and language that is Australian sport.
