Richard Cole will make his anticipated debut for Essendon this weekend, with Kevin Sheedy today confirming the former Magpie will play for the Bombers against Brisbane.

Arriving at the club after Collingwood agreed to trade him in exchange for draft selection 23, Cole has struggled with a number of soft tissue injuries before finding form in recent weeks with the Bendigo Bombers.

A fortnight ago, Sheedy threw the challenge to the 23-year old asking him to put up his hand in the final stages of the season to prove his worth to the club after not playing a senior game in the red and black.

But to Cole’s credit, with hard work he has earned a position in the team.

""He will play this week,"" Sheedy explained in a press conference today.

""He is training very well. He has got his weight down as well. He has done everything that we have asked. It is good to see him do that and that is his reward.

""He played very very well last week in the VFL side, the Bendigo Bombers, so lets get him in and have a look at him before the season shuts on us.""

Sheedy was today back where he belongs following a week on the sidelines after shoulder surgery. Returning to the coaching helm for his weekly press conference, the master coach is confident his team will match the Lions this Saturday night with an injection of experience into the side including Adam McPhee who returns from suspension and Dustin Fletcher from injury.

But it will be the return of James Hird who is almost guaranteed as a certain starter, that will excite the Bomber fans.

""He is a very hard person to judge in terms of his body because he doesn’t know himself sometimes.

""So obviously at the moment we think 100 per cent but we haven’t got through training tonight yet so I don’t want to say 100 per cent but I would say he would be pretty right to play this week.""
