An embarrassing display by the Bombers has put their season in serious doubt after being outclassed by a competitive Crows outfit by 84 points at AAMI Stadium tonight.

Essendon assistant coach Ashley Prescott said a woeful first quarter performance put Essendon on the back foot early and, despite their best efforts to work themselves back into the game, the early damage had been done.

""That was extremely disappointing and there were not a lot of positives to come out of it,"" Prescott said.

""In the first quarter there were a lot of players that didn't put in enough effort and Adelaide got some momentum.

""We were relatively happy with the third quarter, we actually outscored them in the third quarter but it was too little too late.""

Prescott said Essendon has to learn to be competitive on the road if they are to establish themselves as a serious finals competitor.

""I suppose it is certainly looking like we can not win on the road but I think we were competitive up in Sydney again,""  he said.

""Adelaide has obviously been a hoodoo. I'm not sure whether it is necessarily about winning on the road, I think it is more about just making sure that against a hard running side like Adelaide we have actually got our legs going and show a bit more of an attitude to compete and run harder because tonight we just didn't seem to help the bloke with the ball.""
