Robert Shaw’s thoughts:
Dustin Fletcher is the premier defender in the competition. Suspensions have been well documented and commented on and it has been disappointing. He is in the real prime of his career and he can get better and is a very important player to us. He has had another good year.

What some of fan’s had to say:
Dustin is still one of our most crucial players. For that reason his suspensions were so disappointing. The reports were mainly due to the his style of play which is never to take someone out of the game. Nevertheless he MUST adjust (and it was pleasing to read his recent comments saying just that) or his value to the team is largely diminished. He certainly let the team down in that regard this season yet regularly demonstrated when he did play that there is lot of excellent defensive footy left in him yet. Angela Stanton

Everyone knows when a fit Dustin Fletcher plays Essendon are unstoppable. However, he needs to learn how to control his body parts to stop getting suspended. Anna Kelty

If only Fletch had played more than 14 games in 2003, maybe we would have progressed further than the 2nd finals week. A great full back & Essendon star performer for many years, now, as a mature footballer, Dustin must stand up & show the Essendon faithful what a fantastic leader he is. All Bomber supporters know he can do it. Go Fletch in 04'. Anthony Phillips

Undoubtedly one of the games best ever fullbacks, however injury ... and of more concern, indiscretions have robbed Essendon of Fletcher's service during the most important stage of the last two years. When he is playing, Essendon are brilliant, when he is not Essendon can look shaky. Paul Bosher

Dustin is still the best fullback in the game. Unfortunately, it seems that in recent seasons he's spent more time at the tribunal than on the field. The most disappointing thing about it is that they've all been silly little incidents, that just show poor discipline. Hopefully Dustin can stay out on the field next year because his absence really disrupts the side's structure in defense. Shane King

When he played the team (particularly the defence) played with more confidence and drive. Needs to concentrate more on eliminating the non-disciplined and silly aspects of his game as he is too valuable to have sitting on the sidelines. Rod Ansell
The great fullback unfortunately had another undisciplined season at Windy Hill, being suspended for the all important semi final against Port Adelaide. Was injured for some part, but whenever he played, Essendon were a better team. Stefan Paoli

he played really well this year. especially playing against Neitz round 2, where he kept him really quiet. there were also some other really good games as well. he played a really good year, keep up the good work. Carla De Luca
