HARVEY MADE A BOMBER CHAMPION
One of Essendon's favourite sons Mark Harvey was elevated to Champion status last night after winning group five of the Champions of Essendon. Harvey faced tough competition - Dustin Fletcher, Bill Busbridge and Ian (Bluey) Shelton who were three quality defenders to pull on the red and black guernsey. But Harvey got the nod in a very tight contest. He joins Mark Thompson, Simon Madden, Michael Long and Dick Reynolds as Champions of Essendon.
One of Essendon's favourite sons Mark Harvey was elevated to Champions status last night after winning group five of the Champions of Essendon. Harvey faced tough competition - Dustin Fletcher, Bill Busbridge and Ian (Bluey) Shelton who were three quality defenders to pull on the red and black guernsey. But Harvey got the nod in a very tight contest. He joins Mark Thompson, Simon Madden, Michael Long and Dick Reynolds as Champions of Essendon.
Harvey a current assistant coach at Essendon played 206 games for the Bombers between 1984 and 1987. During his career Harvey made his name as one of the best centre-half backs in the league. His experience and skill showed in every game. Harvey would control the backline and his presence was always felt. He was famous for his ferocious attack at the footy and his never-say-die attitude. He played in three Essendon premierships - 1984, 1985 and 1993 and won the club best and fairest in 1992.
Harvey finished ahead of Dustin Fletcher and Bill Busbridge. Fletcher and Busbridge will now return to the nominee pool while Ian Shelton has been omitted. Group six voting has commenced and it asks Essendon fans to continue to split some of the greatest midfielders the club has seen. Group six comprises Jack Clarke, Percy Odgen, Darren Williams and Hugh Gavin - you can vote on the Champions of Essendon via the BomberLand website or by phone on 1902 245 049.
Last year’s grand finalists Essendon and Brisbane gave an indication of how far ahead of the rest of the competition they are with resounding victories over Richmond and Hawthorn respectively. A thrashing was the order of the day also for the Blues, courtesy of Sydney, and the Tigers, who went into the match against Essendon rated as equal favourites. Both Melbourne and the Kangaroos continued to surprise.
