The number 16 guernsey – vacated by the retired Paul Barnard – will retain its link to Perth with young Western Australian Kepler Bradley being allocated that number for season 2004. Barnard’s first foray into senior football came at East Perth while Bradley was a member of West Perth’s Premiership side last season. Essendon’s guernsey numbers for season 2004 have now been finalised.

Courtney Johns, another product of Western Australia, will wear the number 21 guernsey vacated by Danny Jacobs and previously worn by new assistant coach Dean Wallis. Brent Stanton will wear number 34, Ricky Dyson takes 36 and Jay Nash is number 38.

Of the players picked up in the trade period, Justin Murphy will wear the number 28 guernsey previously worn by Cory McGrath. Former Western Bulldogs midfielder Mark Alvey gets 15, formerly worn by Rob Forster-Knight while Matthew Allan takes over number 27 from Steven Alessio.
