As the launch of the new Bomber website draws closer, we continue our look at the great coaches at Windy Hill. On Friday supporters will be able to vote on who they believe is the greatest coach ever seen at Windy Hill in our new weekly poll. The weekly poll is one of a number of new features that will be introduced to the Bomberland site. Yesterday we looked at our first nomination - the great Dick Reynolds - today we look at the legendary John Worrall.
John Worrall coached Carlton from 1902 until 1909 before he was lured across to Essendon. Already considered an accomplished coach, Worrall was expected to have his work cut out to turn around a side which was seen to be under-achieving. The Bombers hadn't won a premiership for a decade and their results in between time had been moderate.
But Worrall did the unthinkable in his first year and took the Bombers to a Premiership. Essendon rolled Collingwood, the reigning Premiers, by six points after leading all day. The Bombers were a fast and skillful side who were not suited in the wet conditions but Worrall managed to engineer a famous victory. He didn't have a great number of stars at his disposal but his side was well drilled and they proved too good.
Worrall promised Essendon supporters at the 1912 AGM that their side would again win the premiership and he was true to his word. The Bombers toppled the flag favorites South Melbourne by 14 points.
Worrall was again instrumental in the victory. He had an excellent rapport with the players and could bring the best out of them. His players put the underdog tag behind them and withstood enormous pressure to lead at every change and win the match.
The Bombers had won back-to-back flags. Worrall was hailed as a coaching genius and the star-studded team he had built up was expected to dominate the competition for many years. But a mixture of injuries, departures and the first World War saw the club decimated.
Jack Worrall coached the Bombers 135 times between 1911 and 1918, winning 65 of those matches and becoming the first coach to take the club to back-to-back premierships. He is undoubtedly one of the game's great coaches.
