However, in some cases Australian Rules football is an unfamiliar concept, particularly to those of different backgrounds and origins. With little knowledge of the game, it can be difficult for some to gain enough insight and appreciation to feel involved. That was, until now.
The GLoBALL program, a joint initiative run by the Essendon Football Club and Cricket Victoria, seeks to enable international students and new migrants settle into life in Australia, and aims to use sport as a vehicle to engage new migrants into the wider Australian community.
Recently, GLoBALL ran an AFL Season Ambassador Training Day at Windy Hill, which saw over 50 of the 230 Essendon Football Club members, who volunteered as ambassadors, share their football passion and knowledge with new migrants and international students.
Over 400 GLoBALL participants from a variety of backgrounds attended the game and for many it was their first ever AFL experience. Throughout the game, ambassadors sat with groups of international students, shared their football knowledge and played their part in assisting new migrants experience the Australian sporting culture.
GLoBALL participant, Lily Lou had only recently arrived in Australia with her family and knew very little about Australia Rules football. Lou, who frequently travelled on public transport, felt isolated when she and her family were surrounded by hordes of football fans.
Eager to become involved in the Australian sporting culture, Lou and her family arrived 4 hours early to the first GLoBALL game at Etihad Stadium, dressed from head to toe in red and black.
“Before the game I did my best to find red and black clothes from my wardrobe to look the part,” she said.
“When you cheer on your team, the Bombers, with the locals you feel like you are part of the city and culture and you can share your experiences about the game with locals. It’s just the best thing I have done since coming to Australia,” Lou said.
Through the GLoBALL program, Essendon hopes to create a new generation of supporters whilst importantly, creating an environment that assists new migrants and students to feel included in the wonderful culture and language that is Australian sport.
