Essendon defender Michael Hibberd is a strong chance for selection this week, after consistent performances in the VFL in the past fortnight.

General manager of football operations Paul Hamilton said the 22-year-old, who has overcome a hamstring injury, would bolster the Bombers’ side set to take on Fremantle on Saturday night.

“Michael will certainly put his hand up this week (for selection),” Hamilton said.

“He’s now had two games back through the VFL and played really well against Box Hill so I would suggest he is a strong chance to make a return this week.”

Hamilton said the club’s recent week off from football had provided the opportunity for the players to come back to training refreshed ahead of the crucial clash at Patersons Stadium.
“It’s been important for the boys to have a break and they have been able to refresh, and there is a really good feel at the moment,” he said.

“Hopefully we’ll have a refreshed group and one that is fit and firing to go against Fremantle this weekend.”

Reigning best-and-fairest winner David Zaharakis is likely to miss another four weeks after suffering a quad strain during a training session last week.

“It’s a longer term injury and he is still likely to be out for another four weeks, but it provides the opportunity for others to step up and provide the run and pace that we really need in the side,” Hamilton said.

Jason Winderlich and Brent Prismall are also in the final stages of completing their rehabilitation processes after the pair suffered hamstring injuries following their respective knee surgeries last year.

“It is a slow progress with Jason but recently it has been his hamstring that is holding him back,” Hamilton said.

“He is now running at 100% which is fantastic and we’re expecting him to return to the field in about two weeks.

“Brent’s knee is coming along really well and again he is one that has had hamstring concerns too which is common after a knee reconstruction so we’re expecting it to be a 12-month process from when he initially injured his knee last year.”
