There are more questions than answers about the Essendon Football Club as it prepares for its season opener against the Kangaroos at The Dome next Monday. It is this element of the unknown that is creating real excitement around Club and among its supporters, according to senior coach Matthew Knights.

Speaking exclusively on Bomber.tv as part of his season preview, Knights said he could not be sure what the season ahead would hold but he reiterated he will steadfastly stick to his pledge to play youth.

“It’s certainly not going to be a development year but it is really hard to put a label on it. What I do know is that there is a philosophy to put younger players into the team in defence and the midfield and we will do that aggressively,” Knights said.

“What flows from that in terms of results is probably up in the air – that is one of the exciting things about coaching Essendon and maybe being an Essendon supporter at the moment. There is that exhilaration about going to the game and wondering how many times is Leroy Jetta going to run around someone, is he going to get through a couple of times and kick goals or is he going to get caught with the ball.

“It is exciting and there is a plan for the future but in saying that, whatever team we put out we will be playing to win.”
