ESSENDON captain Matthew Lloyd is likely to miss at least one week with a badly bruised heel that was sustained during Sunday's five-point loss to Richmond.

Lloyd, 31, injured the heel in the second half in a marking contest, and spent the final quarter on the bench icing the foot.

Coach Matthew Knights said the skipper would most likely remain in Melbourne next weekend when the Bombers travel to Perth to play West Coast.

"We can certainly see some rawness, and it's bled quite heavily initially," he said.

"I would have thought he'd be in great doubt for next week, and I wouldn't like to predict any further than that.

"He'll be a real outside chance for next week in Western Australia."

Lloyd stayed on the field for a period of time after sustaining the injury, but conceded once it hampered his ability to move.

Knights conceded the complaint could be a tricky one, and could yet rule the captain out for more than the initially-expected time frame.

"It's hard to know with those heels. I'm not that experienced myself with those injuries," he said.

"Bruce Reid [club doctor] said it will be definitely next week, and couldn't guarantee the week after.

"It could be a little bit of time so we'll just wait and see."

Knights said Alwyn Davey was fine and expected him to play next week after he copped a heavy knock late in the game.

Mark McVeigh and Jobe Watson received corked thighs during the afternoon, but were rated "a good chance" to play next weekend after a seven-day break.

Knights also said the club had all but ruled emerging forward Scott Gumbleton from playing this year, after initially hoping the unlucky youngster would recover enough from back surgery to play VFL.

"He's starting to train well, but we've basically ruled Scott for the year," he said.

"He's competing in skill type drills, and he did his first bit of competitive activity last week, but for him to play, it would require four or five weeks of that physical activity.

"He's pretty disappointed because he wants to play this year, but we just think for the best interests and the future of the club and for Scott that he has a full pre-season and comes back.

"The operation looks like it's been a wonderful success at this stage, which is most promising."
