Byrne felt that Jason Johnson was fierce and attacking along with Adam Ramanauskas and said there was a marked improvement from Justin Blumfield with his efforts when moved to the mid field. Engine Room member Byrne, believes there is still room for improvement from the team that made the Grand Final last year. “We are still lacking depth across half forward and we need to kick more goals. Danny Jacobs performed well in attack and if newcomer Andrew Walsh can continue to improve on his maiden effort then Jacobs may be freed up to play an attacking role until Hird and Lloyd return from injuries. Good efforts from Barnard, Hille Fletcher and Mark Johnson,” Byrne said.
Avid Bombers supporter Sheree Johns said the Essendon players had more desire and it was a great first game back by the “old fella” Paul Salmon. Similar to Byrne, Johns says there is still room for improvement. “It's time for the baby bombers to stand up & be counted. We're having an horrific run with injuries so it's a great opportunity for the younger players to make their mark,” Johns said.
