Strengths: Fletcher’s main strengths are his kicking and his uncanny ability to get to contests he seems well and truly out of. Kicking out from full back is arguably the most difficult job in football and Fletcher does it as well as any. And while his legs work well his arms do as well, particularly when it comes to spoiling opposition forwards. Time and again opposition forward will seemingly have their name written all over a mark just for Fletcher’s fist to arrive in a knick of time.
Position: While Fletcher has spent time in the forward 50m and done so to reasonable effect, there is little doubt that he is most value to the side at full back. Not only is his kicking and spoiling invaluable, but his experience and coolness gives those around him a sense of confidence.
2003: As has been the case for much of his career, the performance of Fletcher in 2003 will have a telling effect on the whole season. Fit, in-form and most importantly out of the tribunal, and Essendon will be well on the way to a top-four finish. Fletcher missed the Bombers semi-final with Port Adelaide because of suspension and will also miss the season opener against Brisbane at the Gabba. He will be super keen to repay his teammates for his absence when he returns.
Sheedy says: Obviously Fletcher needs to give away his soccer-like tactics and stay away from the tribunal, but we all need to remember that he was the club’s Best and Fairest in 2000 which statistically was the greatest year in the clubs history, a great effort. We would eventually like to play Sam Hunt at full back which would allow us to play Dustin as anchorman in various positions, full back, centre half back, or as a pinch hitter on the forward line.
