Essendon Football Club continues to positively foster andsupport multicultural communities in the north-west region of Melbourne,following last weekend’s 2012 Flemington Eid Festival.

The Multicultural Eid Festival brings together Muslim andnon-Muslim residents of the Moonee Valley municipality and the widercommunity. The Festival is a familyfocused event with sporting activities, cultural and ceremonial performancesand halal food.

The event at Flemington on Saturday drew in a wide rangeof organisations and community groups within the region, with both Essendon andNorth Melbourne representative junior football teams taking part in thefestivities.

Initially down by 21 points, Essendon’s team made animpressive comeback to be defeated by North Melbourne by only a goal at thefinal siren.

A match that was played in the sunshine and good spirit,it was the first time Australian Rules football had been the main sportingevent at the festival – in place of soccer.

In December, Essendon Football Club was awarded theVictorian Multicultural Business Award (Marketing) at the VictorianMulticultural Awards for Excellence – recognising the club’s commitment tomulticultural affairs and involvement to initiatives such as the GLoBALLprogram, Unity Cup, Multicultural Schools Program and the Andrew Welsh Auskick.
