Essendon has added some excitement to its rookie ranks today and it will ensure we see the Bendigo Bombers play some entertaining football this season. And given Essendon’s recent record with rookies, it could be a sign of things to come at senior level. Among the four new names selected at today’s rookie draft were Nathan Lovett-Murray and Andrew Lovett – two youngsters with speed to burn and exquisite skills. Attached are profiles of Essendon’s rookie list players.

Ben Cosgriff

Ben is an 18-year-old from the Murray Bushrangers. He is 188cm and has the ability to play forward or back. He is noted for his strong attack on the football and his ability to kick goals at TAC Cup level. He represented Vic. Country at last year’s National Under 18 championships.

Nathan Lovett-Murray

Nathan is a 21-year-old who played with the Bendigo Bombers last season. He is 189cm and can play anywhere from half-back to wing to ruck rover. He had a solid season with Bendigo – his second half of the year was very consistent. He has worked hard during the pre-season and has put on eight kilograms in the past 12 months. He is a very exciting player who can take a spectacular mark. He is someone we think can step up in the right environment.

Andrew Lovett

Andrew is a 21-year-old who played with East Perth last season. He is a super-quick on-baller / half forward. He is a lightly-framed but an exciting talent who has good goal sense and evasiveness. He was originally from Victoria and did play some football with the Northern Knights.

Peter Summers

Peter is a 19-year-old who played with the Oakleigh Chargers and Northern Bullants last season. He is a 184cm midfielder who is a penetrating kick. He is versatile and physically ready to play VFL football and hopefully AFL football.

James Davies (Essendon)

Davies has played senior football with Essendon and despite being de-listed at the end of last season, the Bombers’ recruiting staff believe he is worth persisting with. He has great pace and uses the football well when he gets it. He needs to dominate for Bendigo this season to give himself the chance of being elevated back to the senior list.

Adrian Wilson (Essendon rookie)

Wilson is a talented player who just needs to stay injury free in 2004 to give himself the best chance of going onto the senior list. Hamstring problems plagued him for much of 2003. But Wilson has put in a very big pre-season and it will be interesting to watch his progress for the Bendigo Bombers in 2004.
