Essendon forward Mark McVeigh will miss this Sunday's clash with Geelong at Colonial Stadium because of a calf injury. McVeigh strained the calf during training at Colonial Stadium yesterday afternoon and was ruled out this morning. While McVeigh has been ruled out, the Bombers have named skipper James Hird who missed last weekend's match against the Bulldogs because of a groin injury. Jason Johnson, Damien Hardwick and Justin Blumfield have also returned to the Essendon side. Sean Wellman will miss because of suspension while Marc Bullen has been omitted.

Essendon football manager Matthew Drain said McVeigh's injury wasn't serious. ""He just pulled up a bit sore after training. We were hoping he would still be available for this weekend but it hadn't improved this morning,"" Drain said. ""We are confident he will be available for our next match against the Kangaroos.""
