Essendon fans would be disappointed tonight, after the Bombers went down to a very confident Brisbane side by 43 points at the Gabba. A promising pre-season by the Bombers counted for little, with the Lions able to out-muscle the visitors in all areas of the game. Some positive signs came from debutant Damian Cupido, who kicked two goals, and Matthew Lloyd made the most from limited opportunities with four goals.
If all goes according to plan this season some of the great names of the Essendon Football Club will achieve playing milestones in 2003. No less than ten players including Joe Misiti, Dustin Fletcher, Mark Mercuri, Jason Johnson, Mark Johnson and Paul Barnard are on track to record significant playing achievements. Joe Misiti is scheduled to play his 200th game for the club in Round 4 against the Western Bulldogs. Misiti has been a long time servant of the club - he debuted in 1992 and was a member of the 1993 and 2000 premiership teams. The 200 game milestone has been a long time coming for the 28-year-old who has missed over 15 games in the past two seasons due to injury.
