The Bombers were training at Xavier College this afternoon as part of the AGL Community Training sessions and regardless of their recent form, it didn’t keep away hundreds of Essendon fans from cheering on their favourite players.
And the media spotlight was firmly on Sheedy, left to defend his young Bomber outfit.
""We would love to be up there with the Kangaroos at the moment, but to be quite honest we just have to get our act together and win on Anzac Day and that’s what we are training for,"" Kevin Sheedy said this afternoon.
""I think any team on the bottom after round four is going to get a kick in the head.
""It’s my responsibility as a coach to get the team playing a whole game, and lets face it we haven’t.
""It’s probably a rude awakening for everyone at the club and the team itself, so lets roll up our sleeves and really work hard to get out of there,"" Sheedy said.
""But it won’t do us any harm. It puts everybody’s feet back in the ground if they have been floating, it makes everybody live their week as the teams who are have been missing the finals and it’s probably good for the AFL competition – its just not good for Essendon fans.""
With the importance of this week’s match, Sheedy worked his players hard during the session.
""Every week is a must win, but when you are last it is even more so.
""I’m not going to give too much away because we have a huge game coming up, why should I talk about too many areas of deficiencies in our make up.
""We have to get a gritty footy team out there to claw our way into a winning position and go on with it.
""You just have to keep your main focus on winning the next match,"" Sheedy said.
