Essendon fans have overwhelmingly voted Bruce McAvaney as the best football commentator at Channel Seven. In a Bomberland Weekly Poll that created plenty of interest, McAvaney received 646 of the 1,413 votes collated - a remarkable 45.72% of the vote. Rising star Anthony Hudson finished in second place with 204 votes with Dennis Cometti (177), Sandy Roberts (169) and Kevin Bartlett (122) the next three. Ian Robertson finished last managing just 95 votes.
Tony Bloomfield from Blackburn said ""Bruce is SPECIAL"" while Adam Kovarik went beyond football and said ""McAvaney is the best in the world"". Brad Bessell from Larrakeyah (NT) could beleive anyone voted against Bruce saying ""His dedication, research and football knowledge is truly Special."" But it wasn't all good news for McAvaney. Rick Fleckner from Mt Barker claims ""McAvaney hasn't got a clue ... thank goodness the football is going to another network next season.""
Brett Edmonson put in a good word for last pacegetter Ian Robertson. ""I would have thought Robbo would get more votes. I think he is second to Bruce. Who could forget his call in the third quarter of the 93' Grand Final - 'Oh, this will hurt Carlton, this will hurt, Calthorpe replies for the Bombers.'
Vikki Watson from Queensland has the final word saying all commentators talk too much. ""Television is a visual medium. It is okay to let the players provide the entertainment without the incessant drivel from commentators that appears to be mandatory.""
This week's poll is asking supporters whether all Essendon's games at Colonial Stadium should be played with the roof closed.
