Howlett was promoted to the Bombers’ senior list in 2010 after impressing with his tough tackling and contested ball winning abilities.
Howlett said at a press conference on Monday he was pleased with Essendon's efforts against a high-rated St Kilda side.
“The Saints are a great team and we have a huge amount of respect for them. They came out as hard as always, so to get over the top of them was a very pleasing result,” Howlett said.
Howlett attributed Essendon’s improving form this season to hard work at trainings, learning from mistakes and becoming a more defensive-minded team.
“We’re not relying on one player to shoulder the load. There’s a contribution from all 22 players,” Howlett said.
“We’ve definitely worked on the defensive side of our game and we’ve seen it can lead to some attacking football.”
Although the Bombers only have a six day break before its important clash with Carlton, Howlett said the players were looking forward to the challenge.
“This week is going to be another big game again against Carlton. They’re a quality side and are obviously going to be tough to beat. If we can get on top early and match it with these good sides then we’ll be very happy.""
“We’re looking forward to that next game now, it’s going to be very exciting to play in front of a big crowd and hopefully, we can play some good footy,” Howlett said.
