As Essendon celebrates Multicultural Round this week we take a look at some of the Multicultural Programs the club runs.
In a bid to encourage people from all different backgrounds and cultures to engage in Australian football and promote diversity within the sport, the Essendon Football Club has established a Multicultural Schools Program.
The program runs in Melbourne’s north-western suburbs through many primary and secondary schools, reaching over 2500 students of all ages and backgrounds.
Its primary goal is to encourage unity in cultural diversity within our schools and wider communities.
It is a 6-10 week program that includes a variety of activities such as: classroom activities, health and career seminars, visits to AFL games, online activities, interactions with Essendon players, tours of the Windy Hill facility and modified football games.
These activities help participants engage with the sport and their friends.
It is hoped that through this program the supporter and player base will broaden and that it will encourage multicultural Australians to learn about football and have a go playing for themselves.
As football is such a large part of Australian culture, this program is aimed to help people who are from diverse backgrounds grow an understanding and love for the game.
