Essendon senior assistant coach Mark Thompson has marveled at the approach of veteran defender Dustin Fletcher to his 21st season at AFL level.

Fletcher recently signed a one-year deal with the Bombers to play in 2013.

Thompson, a former teammate of Fletcher, praised the mindset of the 37-year-old.

“It is just incredible how he is still in the shape he is and how he still has the motivation,” Thompson said.

“Dustin is just incredible how much energy and passion he has for the game.

“As long as you have all that and your body is in good shape, you are still going to be playing.”

Fletcher finished third in this year’s Crichton Medal showing he still has what it takes to match it with the best in the league.

Despite being the oldest player in the competition and playing 365 games he continues to take part in the same training as his teammates.

“Hirdy would let him do whatever he wanted to but he doesn’t want to miss anything,” Thompson said.

“He likes training, likes being at the club, he doesn’t like the weights much but he likes getting out on the field, having a kick and mixing with the boys at the club.

Fletcher is likely to become the Club's games record holder this season if he can play at least another 13 matches to equal Simon Madden's record of 378 games.
