Not surprisingly, his report card rating dropped from 4.95/10 in 2007 to 3.25/10 in 2008 after he suffered recurring hamstring injuries and a broken collar bone. In 2009, the club and fans have high hopes that Gumbleton will deliver on the promise that saw him taken with pick 2 in the 2006 draft.

What some of the Essendon fans had to say:
I love scott gumbleton!! he's going to be a star.. he's so cute and i've watched him play vfl and went to his debut!! he's amaaaaazing.. cant wait till his injury free! (Jayde Johnson)
Unlucky. A full pre-season under his belt should serve him well for a breakthrough season in 2009 (Nathan Beever).
Disappointing that we didn’t get to see him (Nicholas Morrey).
Haven’t seen him play much footy at all but he was taken at number 2 for a reason and he will show us all next year why he was taken number 2 at centre half forward (Khaled Taleb).
Another year ruined by injuries. Hopefully by the Club putting him away early will allow Scott time to get his body in the shape required to play competitive football. Scott has great skills and could be a valuable contributor for many years to come but he must start playing games! (Rod Ansell)
Scott was meant to be the future of the forward line, people saying he could become a Lance Franklin. Sadly, injury plagued his season and couldn’t get a match. Look forward to seeing him at half forward, tearing it up with Jay Neagle as the new Essendon forward line (Joseph Attard).
