Essendon coach Matthew Knights said today he had received no indication from retired champion James Hird that he was considering a comeback. The Age newspaper reported Hird had sought a meeting with Knights to discuss the possibility of a comeback.

“I have a good relationship with James and I haven’t had a conversation with him that would suggest he was serious about playing again,” Knights said today.

“I also heard James on radio this morning and he was very strong on the fact that he was happily retired and concentrating on his business interests. So he has been clear about the fact he won’t be making a comeback.

“James was a great part of this Club for such a long. I am sure at some stage in the future we will talk about him having an involvement with the Club in some capacity but we have never pushed him on that issue. It was important for him to get some time away from the game and we respect that.”

Hird, 35, told SEN radio this morning he was “happily retired” and was in no physical shape to be considering a return to football. “I could not be further away from coming back and playing football,” Hird said.
