Essendon forward Angus Monfries said it is an emotional day for the players.
“I think Essendon and Collingwood are really lucky and privileged to play in such a game. To remember those that have fallen and those that have served our country, it is a great honour to be able to do that,” Monfries told BomberTV.
Jake Melksham experienced his first ANZAC day last year and said the prematch ceremony is inspiring to be a part of.
“I remember lining up for the national anthem … I was next to Licha (Jason Winderlich) and Fletch (Dustin Fletcher). Licha who had played in a couple, I remember being arm and arm with them and Licha looked over at me and said ‘this is what you play footy for so make the most of it today,’ Melksham said.
""It was just an amazing experience in terms of the crowd; you can barely hear yourself think.”
In the build up to this year’s ANZAC Day clash, the Essendon website is giving fans the opportunity to vote in a special online poll for the awarding of retrospective ANZAC Day medals from 1995-1999.
