Essendon defender Dean Solomon underwent arthroscopic surgery today to repair a small tear in the cartilage of his right knee – an injury he sustained during the club’s Wizard Cup match against Carlton. Despite the surgery, medical staff remain hopeful he will be available to play against Melbourne in the season opener at the MCG on Saturday, March 26.

""It is something that if it had occurred mid-season it could be managed – the tear is very small,"" Essendon football operations manager Dominic Cato said. ""But given we have a full season ahead of us we think it is sensible to try and get the problem rectified now.""

""We still have the best part of a month to go before the season starts and it is such a minor procedure, we are hopeful he will be back for Round 1. Dean has shown in the past he recovers well from these type of setbacks.""

The good news on the injury front is that Ty Zantuck has fully recovered from minor back surgery and will play against Brisbane at Carrara on Saturday night. Zantuck’s return is timely given the Solomon surgery as he would seem the logical replacement in the Essendon defensive set up.
