Big name players set for VFL return
Following key defender Tayte Pears’ return to the VFL, both Scott Gumbleton and Andrew Welsh are set to follow, after successfully overcoming hamstring and calf injuries. General manager of football operations Paul Hamilton said Gumbleton, who has been sidelined with a hamstring complaint, made impressive progress with his recovery regimes and looks set to return to the field through the VFL in the coming weeks.

“Gumby is feeling really comfortable and really positive about his next big crack at it and he will most likely be available in the week after the VFL bye. We’re definitely looking forward to seeing him out on the field,” Hamilton told BomberTV.
Hamilton said this week’s VFL bye had come at an unfortunate time for Pears, who was looking for consistent game time following his return from a foot injury.
""Unfortunately for Tayte, the VFL bye has come around and he would have loved to have had a run around again this week, but it’s also disappointing for players like Andrew Welsh and Jake Carlisle, who would have been available this week. They are both back in full training and we’d expect them all to play the following week [after the bye].”
Captain Jobe Watson and Michael Hurley will face fitness tests before Friday night’s Call to Arms clash against Melbourne at the MCG.
“Both those lads are recovering really well. They’re both very professional with their rehab and are doing all the right things. While there are obviously no guarantees they will be available this weekend, we will test them later in the week and make a decision at that stage. “
Hamilton told BomberTV that Pears’ return to the VFL was extremely encouraging, after he claimed 14 possessions in only a half of football.
“I think everyone is really excited by the way he performed and he looked really good out there and really comfortable.”
“And the great news following that is he has pulled up really well with no pains or soreness in his foot so it’s really positive news. We look forward to the next few weeks with Tayte, and while he is still a few weeks away from an AFL football level it’s a very exciting time for him and the club,” Hamilton said.
“We might have Pears playing centre-half back and Gumbleton centre-half forward for our VFL side next week which is really exciting and hopefully we can get them both back up and playing some really good football for the second half of the year. ”
After almost a year on the sidelines, Essendon defender Tayte Pears made an encouraging return to competitive football in the Bendigo Bombers' 42-point win over Geelong in round nine of the VFL on Saturday. Bendigo coach Shannon Grant said Pears' performance was impressive under the circumstances, and that the 21-year-old had pulled up well after the game.
