Essendon has suffered consecutive losses for the first time since Rounds 7 and 8 of the 1999 season, losing to Carlton by seven points in a tight contest at the MCG today. That's the bad news. It gets worse. James Hird was forced from the field early in the final quarter with what looked like a serious ankle injury. Although the extent of the injury is not yet known, it appears that Hird has escaped any major structural damage and will return for the finals. Full-forward Matthew Lloyd will also front the tribunal after being booked on a charge of striking Simon Fletcher in the third quarter.
