Bomber speedster Alwyn Davey is free to play this weekend against Carlton after the Match Review Panel decided he had no case to answer for contact made on Adelaide's Matthew Jaensch during Essendon's win against the Crows on Friday night.

The panel said that Davey sought to engage Jaensch for body contact in the lead-up to a marking contest. Jaensch jumps earlier than expected as Davey moves to protect his space under the ball and contact is made while Jaensch is in the air. It was the view of the panel that Davey’s action was not a deliberate attempt to run underneath his opponent, while he was in the air. No further action was taken.
 

The following charges were laid from other incidents on the weekend

 

Charges Laid:

Andy Otten, Adelaide Crows, has been charged with a Level One trip against Stewart Crameri, Essendon, during the third quarter of the Round 17 match between the Adelaide Crows and Essendon, played at AAMI Stadium on Friday July 15, 2011.

 

In summary, he can accept a reprimand and 60 points towards his future record with an early plea.

 

The incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), low impact (one point) and body contact (one point). This is a total of four activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level One offence, drawing 80 demerit points and a reprimand. He has no existing good or bad record. An early plea reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to a reprimand and 60 points towards his future record.

 

Luke McPharlin, Fremantle, has been charged with a Level One engaging in rough conduct offence against Craig Bird, Sydney Swans, during the first quarter of the Round 17 match between Fremantle and the Sydney Swans, played at the SCG on Sunday July 17, 2011.

 

In summary, due to a five-year good record, he can accept a reprimand and 70.31  points towards his future record with an early plea

 

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Sydney Swans, the incident was assessed as negligent conduct (one point), low impact (one point) and high contact (two points). Craig Bird, Sydney Swans, has been charged with a first offence for making negligent contact with an umpire (Rob Findlay) during the fourth quarter of the Round 17 match between the Sydney Swans and Fremantle, played at the SCG on Sunday July 17, 2011.

 

In summary, he can accept a $900 sanction with an early plea.

Other Incidents Assessed:

Stanley had his eyes on the ball at all times and it was the view of the panel that the Gold Coast player had no realistic alternative way to contest the ball. No further action was taken.

 

Contact between West Coast’s Josh Kennedy and Fremantle’s Brett Peake from the third quarter of Saturday’s game was assessed. West Coast’s Nic Naitanui takes possession of the ball from a stoppage and begins running towards the West Coast goal. Peake is chasing him in an attempt to tackle when Kennedy shepherds the St Kilda player. It was the view of the panel that contact was made to the body and there was no forceful high contact. No further action was taken.

 

Contact between Port Adelaide’s Hamish Hartlett and Melbourne’s Dan Nicholson from the second quarter of Saturday’s game was assessed. A medical report from the Melbourne Football Club said that player Nicholson was not treated for any injury and was able to play out the match. Contact was determined to be below the force required to sustain a report. No further action was taken.

 

Contact between the Sydney Swans’ Rhyce Shaw and Fremantle’s Tendai Mzungu from the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game was assessed. Player Shaw has gone to ground while chasing a loose ball on the wing area. As he attempts to take possession, he makes contact with the Fremantle player, tripping him. It was the view of the panel that Shaw’s actions were a realistic attempt to contest the ball and that the trip was accidental. No further action was taken.

 

Contact between the Geelong Cats’ James Podsiadly and the Brisbane Lions’ Matt Maguire from the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game was assessed. Contact was made to the shoulder/arm area and was below that required to constitute a reportable offence. No further action was taken.
