2002: Injuries and suspension kept Rioli to just 15 games in 2002. He played mainly across half back but also had stints in the midfield and in the forward line. Again Essendon fans were treated to some Rioli magic. His sublime skills across the half-back line created many attacking moves and his disposal was high quality as per usual. He had the Bomber faithful begging for more.

Strengths: Few players in the game can read the play as well as Rioli and it was clearly one of the reasons he became such a damaging player across half back. He ran off his man at the right time and hurt opposition forwards who let him go with his excellent disposal. His strength and pace from a standing start are also features of his game.

Position: Can play anywhere really but it seems to be a decision between half back and half forward. He combined so well with Scott Lucas late in the season that it might be the half back line that benefits from the presence of Rioli.

2003: Essendon fans would simply love to see a fully fit Dean Rioli play an uninterrupted season. He has the capacity to dominate games for periods as it is – that could be extended to four quarters if he can keep the injuries at bay. He is clearly a very important player to Essendon. He is creative and has that ability to draw opposition players to him and set up the loose man. If we get to see the best of Dean Rioli in 2003 it will be an unforgettable season.

Kevin Sheedy says: Keen Essendon observers think Dean looks the fittest they have seen him since he has been at Essendon. If he can reach and maintain top fitness he could become one of the best centremen in the AFL His ability to play is similar to Leon Baker of the early 80’s. If, as we expect he peaks somewhere between 25 and 28 we could have a champion, but then it’s all up to him.
